From the eyes of a volunteer: Island life in the Maldives

6th June 2011

After a month of volunteering as a teacher of Information Technology in the Maldives, Vanessa Crookes returns to Winchester and relates her experiences to the Hampshire Chronicle.

Vanessa was stationed in the island of Komandoo in the northern atoll of Shaviyani. With an area of less than 21 acres, the island is inhabited by about 1,800 people.

“I was placed in the local school, teaching IT and giving workshops on their newly-installed interactive whiteboard.” she had said. “The Maldivians are a wonderfully gentle nation and I know my work out there was appreciated and beneficial to the teachers and their pupils".
